There is a huge need for social and intellectual engagement among adult nonspeaking individuals in Southern California, with few services offering age-appropriate environments and content for community building and intellectual stimulation.
We host this informal series of topic-driven gatherings, where adult nonspeakers can come together to learn from experts and curated materials (content will be college-level or higher), socialize, and develop skills for community-building.
Hosts:
Tara Sayuri Whitty (president, Keiruna Inc.) brings her expertise in community-based engagement and collaboration, capacity-building program development and implementation, and environmental topics, as well as her experience supporting her nonspeaking autistic brother, Danny Whitty, and working with nonspeaking individuals since 2023.
Gigi Nelson brings her experiences as a mother to two nonspeaking children, and has worked with nonspeaking individuals since 2021.
Format:
Generally, we prepare materials for participants to read and/or listen to during the week, and then we gather once a week (in-person or via Zoom) for seminars and discussions in a social environment. Each participant must bring their own 1-to-1 support person.
